Paula Youens

I come from a background in graphic design & illustration.  As a professional freelance illustrator based in London & Cambridge I worked for national newspapers & magazines including The Observer, Guardian, Express, Independent, Country Living, Cosmopolitan . As editorial illustrator with the Times for 12 years, my job was to analyse journalists’ copy under pressure & to tight deadlines. During this time I exhibited in group & solo shows across London – at the ICA, Workshop Gallery, Barbican, Battersea Arts Centre & further afield at the Ikon/Birmingham, Amazone/Amsterdam. Work is also held in collections at the British Museum.

Relocating to the Southwest in 2004, I joined Double Elephant Printworkshop in Exeter. Despite it’s traditional base, the medium of printmaking is open to subversion & manipulation. Modern techniques & materials make this possible & I’ve been able to combine a love of drawing with print’s elements of risk, invention & surprise.

Drawing informs everything I do. Landscape is often the start point, with rapid sketches beginning the process.  Currently I’m using my sketchbooks  for a series of experimental collagraph prints using unusual, throwaway materials – cardboard, glue, texture paste, varnish & grit to achieve expressive, atmospheric effects.

My work is represented at Thelma Hulbert Gallery/Honiton, Herringbone/Charmouth, Shed Gallery/Barcelona.

I exhibit regularly  at Lyme Arts Fest, Exeter Open Studios, Dorset Art Weeks & many group shows at the Malthouse, Lyme Regis. More recent exhibitions have been at Thelma Hulbert/Honiton, RWA/Bristol, Royal Albert Museum/Exeter.
