Texan artist Jane Cornish Smith and London artist Sally Shrubsall are cousins that come together in their first collaborative show to present a juxtaposition of style and approach; abstract Texan landscapes contrast with interior ‘landscapes’ depicted in portraits of drag queens.
Jane’s work reflects the flat vastness of land, large atmospheric expanses, and colours that depict the topography of Texas. Her paintings in oil, mixed media and encaustic wax are layered on canvas, paper or wood, and reveal the textures and nuances of the rugged environment outside her studio window.
In contrast, Sally’s paintings are focused on the flamboyance, artifice and glamour of drag queens. Coming from a theatrical background, she has always been interested in painting performers. ‘I think of my painting,’ she says, ‘as a record of a performance, following a “script” during an intense and action packed realisation.’
Open daily 10.30am-4.30pm, free admission.
